FAQ on the Hwy 22X Off-Leash Dog Park

By Diane Colley-Urquhart on December 8 2015

My office has heard from several residents and pet owners in regards to the closing of the 22X off-leash area located in the median of Highway 22X by Spruce Meadows (James Mckevitt Road and Spruce Meadow Way). Below, we hope to answer any and all questions pertaining to the park closure.

Who owns this area?

The off-leash dog park area is within The Province’s Transportation Utility Corridor (TUC) and is owned by The Province through the Alberta Infrastructure Department. Currently, the space is being leased by Spruce Meadows.

Why is The Province closing the area?

As this space is currently leased by Spruce Meadows, the lease is ending on December 31, 2015. Unfortunately, The Province does not intend to renew the lease with Spruce Meadows in preparation for the construction of the Southwest Calgary Ring Road (SWCRR) from 2016 – 2021.

Why can’t The City of Calgary take over the lease?

The City’s Parks is not in a position to take over the lease due to its temporary status and the resources required to maintain and service the area.

What will the area become of once construction of the SWCRR is complete?

At this time, the long term use of this area is undetermined. Based on its location, it could be used as a storm pond.

Why are residents only hearing of this now?

Leading up to construction, which is anticipated to begin in late 2016, the TUC needs to be prepped and cleared for work to begin. The timing of this area’s closure is appropriate, based on the existing lease and the time required to ensure the TUC is ready for construction.

Are there any plans to add another off-leash area adjacent to the park?

At this time there are no plans to include an off-leash area to replace the off-leash area that will be closed by the New Year, but alternatively there are official off-leash parks within Ward 13, located in Woodbine and Canyon Meadows. Who may I speak with in regards to this closure if I have further questions?

If you have further questions regarding the Hwy 22X park closure, please contact The Province’s Alberta Infrastructure Department at 310-0000 to speak to a representative.
